We all know that homemade food is often healthier and tastes better than ready-made or packaged foods. But in our stressful daily lives, we often do not have as much time to cook, or so we think. With a few tricks, you can significantly reduce the time it takes to prepare food. We will show you the three golden rules that are guaranteed to help you cook faster!
If you frequently use ready meals, repair products or baking mixes, it is likely to save time. Finding a recipe and measuring the ingredients can be daunting. With a little routine and a well-equipped kitchen, you have to cook on your own, but you do not need much more time. So we will tell you the things that you should definitely avoid when cooking.
Trick # 1: Mise en place
You probably know this from cooking shows on TV. When cooking there, everything is often cut and ready for the cook in small bowls, and the actual cooking is really surprisingly fast. Unfortunately, we can not help you in the kitchen to do this job for you. But we can transfer this trick from professional gastronomy to our cooking. There is even an expression for this: Mise en place. Every professional chef first learns this basic rule, as good organization in the kitchen often speeds up the process. It means nothing more than preparing the workplace. In order not to have to look in your cupboards for a specific spice while you are cooking or burning the onions in the pan while you are still chopping the vegetables, you must first prepare them all.
Here is how it works: To do this, you must first thoroughly clean your workspace. Next, place all the ingredients you need for a recipe on the table, including oil and spices. If you always want to cook according to this principle, there is no better tool than the Frankfurter Brett, a high quality cutting board that includes containers in which you can slide the cuttings and transfer them to the stove:
You must also provide all utensils. Finding or rinsing the grater or strainer during cooking can slow down the cooking process. Once everything is ready, you can start cutting. With some music, a podcast or an audiobook on the side, this job is much easier. You can also place the cut ingredients on large plates to have them on hand quickly during cooking. You will be surprised how much more fun cooking is when you have already prepared everything perfectly.
Extra tip: Chopping onions and garlic takes a lot of time and tears. If you want to go faster, you can use frozen onions that have already been sliced (you can get 1 kg from Rewe for about 1.79 euros). Trick # 2: Keep your knives sharp!
The absolute prohibition in any kitchen are blunt knives. Unfortunately, these are still very common. You do not need to spend a lot of money on sharp knives. Even an expensive Japanese knife will eventually become blunt if you do not take care of it properly. With blunt knives, cutting is just tedious and takes a lot longer. In addition, you can be more easily injured with a blunt knife because they tend to slip from the food you cut. First, get used to not cleaning your knives in the dishwasher. It is best to always wash them by hand immediately after use, dry them and then store them in a protected piece of knife rather than in the cutlery drawer.
If you have knives that were once sharp, you may be able to sharpen them again with a sharpening steel. You can get it for less than 10 euros on Amazon. The application is learned quickly. It is best to pull out the knife you intend to use on the steel a few times before each use. You will be amazed at how much butter glides on food now. Slicing with sharp knives is guaranteed to be more fun than fighting with boring stings.
However, if a knife becomes really dull after a long period of use, the sharpening steel will no longer help. Because this is only there to arrange the tiny knife teeth back in a straight line. You can either have a knife sharpened by a professional knife sharpener or you can buy a water stone.
This has different rough sides over which you have to pull the knife several times. After a few minutes, your knives will be really sharp again for a few months.
Trick # 3: Read first and then cook!
Especially if you are cooking from a recipe that you are trying for the first time, you should read it carefully in advance. Otherwise, sometimes confusion can arise during cooking. Constantly reading the recipe just slows you down unnecessarily. If you have already internalized what exactly needs to be done, cooking will be much more intuitive. You will also have less fat on your tablet or smartphone.
